Hugh Masekela Is For-Evergreen
To many of you who didn’t witness the true legendary stage performances by the man who has been on stage for about 55 years, bringing joy and solace to the hearts of many, then here is another chance of a lifetime to make it up for those ‘misses’, as the King is back!
I caught up with ‘Uncle Hugh’ as I love to call him, to ask him few questions about himself, music and the night to be remembered come Saturday the 22nd. When he started with me, word for word, wits caressing his vast knowledge, I couldn’t stop learning and having fun, especially when his fond memories about his old time friend, who I adore in the same vein, the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti were reminisced. Uncle Hugh has something in him that no man can deny of wanting – authentic music.
He has that humor that can wipe away the tears off your eyes, he has the passion to do what he loves doing, well in that case, he is able to make your feet keep tapping, your fingers keep snapping, your head keep nodding. Am I exaggerating?
Well get to meet him, then you will understand why the organizers have brought back the legend for this show, and Gil O Real, General Manager for Business Development and Marketing of Kasapreko Company Limited, clears it here, “Bringing back Hugh Masakela as our headline star is in response to the clamour for an encore following last year’s overwhelmingly successful concert.”
For a man who is a master of the Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Trombone and Cornet, then words can truly not explain why he remains one of the masters of the Jazz and Afrobeat genre of music.
But come the 22nd of September, 2012, an unforgettable experience is about to be felt at the State Banquet Hall on the platform of the Kasapreko Africa Legends Night with support from saxophonist Steve Bedi, Lady May from Namibia, Ben Brako and Bertha; and not forgetting that there will be rib-cracking interweaving moments from Ghana’s finest satirist Kwaku Sintim Misa (KSM) as he plays host to the night.
Watch Uncle Hugh Masekela talk about the surprises and joy he has on the night, and least I forget, there is also a warning from the self acclaimed ‘sit down’, ‘…I will like to encourage the women not to wear high-heels because they’re going to be dancing most of the night’. Enjoy.
