Asanteman Association of Georgia
The Asanteman Association of Georgia, Inc. was founded in 1987 by a group of Ghanaians resident in the Atlanta area. The founding members felt a desire to establish an organization to provide a forum where the Ashanti culture could be displayed. Furthermore, the need for the association was spurred by similar organizations in New York and Toronto and their desire to educate second generation Ashantis about their cultural heritage.
In 1989, the first chief of the Asanteman Association, Nana Ntomo Atakora, was inaugurated. The ceremony was attended by similar organizations in the United States and Canada.
The second chief of the Asanteman Association in Georgia, Nana Yaw Basua was enstooled in 1993. During his reign Nana Basua proudly displayed the Ashanti culture in the city and represented the Ashantis in many festivities. On September 5, 1998 he invited all Ashantis in the United States and Canada to Atlanta for a cultural extravaganza to portray the rich Ashanti culture to our brothers and sisters in the Atlanta metropolitan area. For his efforts the Mayor of Atlanta declared September 5, Ashanti Day in Atlanta.
The Asanteman Association and its cultural aspirations for the Atlanta area have evolved over the years. Today, Africans and Americans alike do not hesitate to proudly display their African outfits whenever the occasion arises. Chieftaincy has permeated the Atlanta community as many American dignitaries in the Atlanta area have been enstooled Chiefs and Queens in Africa. These American chiefs proudly assembled to receive and pay homage the King of Ashanti, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during his visit to Atlanta in September 2004.
In January 2005, Nana Gyetuah-Acheampong was enstooled as the third chief of the Asanteman Association of Georgia. The inauguration of Nana Gyetuah-Acheampong is scheduled for September 2, 2006. The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, will send a delegation to receive the oath of allegiance. A delegation of Ghanaians from across the United States and Canada is expected to attend the inauguration.
This is how far we have come as an organization!
